How to Create the Perfect Second Bathroom

For lots of us, a second bathroom is essential. We can’t imagine the days when homes didn’t even have bathrooms, and we had to make do with a tin bath and an outside loo.

If you haven’t got a second bathroom already, you’re probably trying to find out where you can fit one.

Whether you’ve already got a second loo tucked away downstairs somewhere or you’re still trying to find the perfect place, here are some ideas for how to create a second bathroom that guests will envy.

Try to fit a window in

Because of the lack of space in people’s homes, they often try to fit a bathroom or toilet in spots without access to a window. If you can, make sure there is a natural source of light coming into the bathroom, as it can seem quite dark and dreary without one. Not to mention mouldy if there’s poor ventilation.

If you can’t get a window in, make sure you install lights that mimic natural light and get an extractor fan to help remove some of the moisture from the air.

Use mirrors to your advantage

Mirrors can do wonders for creating the illusion of more space. They will reflect the light and open out the space, even if it’s a very small bathroom. Try to avoid patterns – go for blocks of colour as this will help to make your bathroom seem bigger than it really is. If you don’t fancy lots of huge mirrors in a tiny room, consider mirror tiles – these can work wonders.

Don’t forget about storage

Storage is always important in a bathroom. But if you’ve got a small bathroom, it’s even more important to maximise every bit of space you have available and add storage solutions. Mirrored cabinets work really well so you don’t have to have both separately, and utilise wall space for hooks so you can hang towels and robes.
