Elland

Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Recorded as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town originates from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partially or completely encompassed by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and recognised history as a manufacturing and trading town. The town obtained a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be had at the Manor of Elland and at 2 fairs through the year. The town rapidly came to be a prime spot for wool production, and its downturn in the 20th century had a far-reaching effect on the population, with lots of mills being converted to properties, if they were not knocked down. Quarried near the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were transported cheaply all around the country. Elland was the home to the principal factory of the manufacturer of Gannex products and it is at present the home to the Dobsons sweet factory, which produces a variety of old-fashioned kinds of boiled candies. Suma Wholefoods has been located in the town since 2001, which is the largest worker's co-operative. A range of landmarks are also discovered in the region, including St. Mary the Virgin parish church, the Old Town Hall and Southgate Methodist Church. For all your home upgrades, make certain to make use of respected professionals in Elland to make certain of quality.
