Abbey Wood

Abbey Wood is a residential area of South East London in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. It gets its name from Lesnes Abbey Wood, which used to belong to the monks of Lesnes Abbey. It is situated south of Thamesmead and is 10.6 miles east of Charing Cross. Abbey Wood has a population of just under 24,000 and is known to be a quiet area.

The district is popular amongst commuters; it has an average age of 34 and its railway station was erected in 1849 and today it offers services to Charing Cross, Cannon Street and areas in Kent as a loop service. There are also buses that offer links to Thamesmead, Lewisham and Peckham.

Abbey Wood is recognised for its caravan park situated amongst the Abbey Woods. The woods boasts a park and a football pitch, and the neighbouring Bostall Gardens and Bostall Heath provide lots of sports facilities. A section of the woods is a site of special scientific interest because it has fossils that are from 23-66 million years ago.

If you are looking to have some house upgrades for your property in Abbey Wood, make sure that you get a number of quotations from reliable firms before choosing one.

FAQs

What materials are available for doors?

Doors can be bought in a range of materials, such as wood, aluminium or uPVC. There are also more modern composite doors which use a variety of different materials for toughness and durability. Doors are also available in glass reinforced plastic (GRP), and engineered timber.

Will a new door fit my aperture?

Many doors are made to measure. If you require a non-standard door width, ask a professional door installation company to measure your aperture and manufacture a door to fit. It could be that a small amont of brickwork is needed to accomodate the new door.

do you need planning permission for french doors?

So you’ve decided to add some new French doors for your home? If yes, then you’re likely going to be concerned about whether or not you’ll require a planning permission to get started.

Properties are compelled to meet certain requirements and have proper permission in place in order to be in line with the regulations. Overall, you’re going to need planning permission in the following situations:

• If you want to construct something new.

• If you want to a make a major change to a building like an extension.

• If you want to change the use of your building such as converting it from residential to commercial.

Getting a new door or replacing an existing one doesn’t usually require a planning permission as it’s one of the less complicated improvements you can make to a home. As a result, this kind of improvement is normally covered by permitted development rights especially when you’re not constructing an extension for which to use the French door. However in the events whereby a permission is needed, it will most likely going to be granted if the proposed changes does not have an impact on the primary elevations of the house which is usually the front of the building.

It’s also important to note that permitted development can be limited by local authorities. These limitations include buildings in a conservation area, listed buildings, and if you happen to reside in an area of immense aesthetic appeal or other designated areas like National Parks. If such situation before you change your French doors, it’s important to consult your local authority before proceeding.

Can I replace my front door without replacing the frame?

It is possible to replace a door without replacing the frame. However, most people choose to replace both their door and frame at the same time, as this is likely to make your home security and energy efficiency better, particularly if your existing front door is very old or the frame is distorted.
