Newnham

Newnham or Newnham on Severn is a town in west Gloucestershire, England. It lies in the Royal Forest of Dean, on the west bank of the River Severn, approximately 10 miles south-west of Gloucester and also 3 miles southeast of Cinderford. It is on the A48 road in between Gloucester and also Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales. The village has a parish council. A parish church was developed in the 14th century (although there had actually been a church of simplicity since 1018), and also in 1366 a brand-new church building was built on the high ground of the town as the old one dealt with disintegration from the river. The brand-new structure has itself been damaged by a gunpowder explosion in 1644 throughout the English Civil War as well as a fire in 1881, yet is still in operation. As a result of Newnham's place on the Severn, the Old Romans built 3 roads through the location, where they forded the river. The Anglo-Saxons developed a long-term settlement, the Normans built a motte-and-bailey stronghold for protection, as well as in middle ages times it became a significant port with links around Great Britain and Ireland. In 1171, Henry II of England staged an invasion of Ireland from Newnham. One account asserted that he dove in with 400 ships and 5,000 guys, which suggests its relevance as a port. For a while Newnham was the most effective Gloucestershire community west of the Severn. Its duty as a port and also trading hub decreased, however, rapidly with the 1827 opening of the Gloucester as well as Sharpness Canal. In 1810, an early effort at a Severn passage started building just south of Newnham. Job was abandoned after flooding in 1812. The civil parish becomes part of Newnham and Westbury selecting ward. This ward starts in the north at Westbury-on-Severn and after that complies with the River Severn to Newnham. The complete population of the ward taken at the 2011 census was 3,088.

FAQs

What types of extension are there?

There are many different types of extension. For example, you could install an orangery, flat or pitched roof extension, over-structure extension, single or double storey extension or a glass box extension. Which one of these is most suitable will depend on your existing property.

Do I need my neighbours’ permission for an extension?

Well the reality is, sometimes, neighbours just don’t get along. With several individuals living in close proximity, it’s little surprise they tend to get on one another’s nerves from time to time. However, there’s a difference between having a tiff and being able to transform your house the way you want without having to obtain your neighbour’s approval.

The short and simple answer to this question is, not necessarily. However, you must first educate yourself by thinking about your extension and how it affects the houses around you. We’d strongly recommend you talk proposals through with your neighbour so as to avoid possible conflicts later. There are a number of reasons why your neighbour can protest to your new home extension plans. Let’s take a look!

  • In the event whereby your new extension is blocking their view or providing an unwanted shade on their property. Here, they have a legitimate reason to protest as no one would want their once sunny garden suddenly covered or plummet into shade.
  • In the event where it leads to a loss of privacy. For instance, if your new extension possesses a window which overlooks the neighbour’s property in any way. This is likely to be taken as an invasion of privacy and that has a little to no chance of being a welcomed idea.
  • If it’s a major project and going to take a lot of weeks before completion. The noise generated, especially when your neighbours are enjoying your summer holidays or weekends, can make their gardens not as relaxing as it used to be.
Will my extension be expensive?

It depends on the size and type of extension. Small porches or flat roof extensions are very reasonably priced. More substantial two storey extensions can be expensive. In general, the price is roughly proportional to the amount of space you add to your home.
