Commercial rooftops may be necessary for a number of reasons, particularly if the current roof needs repair or it'll be placed on a brand new build.

There are several factors which will contribute to the structure and planning of a new commercial roof top and the expense will all depend upon the size and style you select.

Thermoplastic roofing is especially popular. This kind of roofing is made of a durable material with high temperature tolerance. The material is a favourite for commercial roofing because it's resistant to uv and chemical substance exposure. The roof structure lasts for over 20 years, having a excellent resistance for fire, punctures and high wind loads.

You could also consider EPDM roofing. The sturdiness and flexibility of EPDM roofing can make it a popular material in the commercial roofing world. These types of roof materials have the benefit of being simpler to install, maintain and repair too, adding to their popularity.

Broughton-in-furness

Broughton-in-Furness is a compact market town on the south boundary of England's Lake District National Park. It's within the Furness region of Cumbria, which was part of Lancashire before 1974. It is positioned near the River Duddon, just inland from the coastal hamlet of Foxfield. Broughton is referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of the townships which formed the Manor of Hougun which was held by Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria. Dating from around the 11th century, the original settlement grew into the local market town for fishing and agriculture, and now plays host to a frequent farmers cattle market. The central obelisk inside the town square was constructed to mark the Jubilee of King George III in 1810. In 1859, the Coniston branch of the Furness Railway, which passed through the town, was opened. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1958, the line was closed down and dismantled, and the line now serves as a public bridleway. The nearest railway station to Broughton is now Foxfield railway station, 2 miles (3.2 km) to the south west of the town. The creation of the National Park in the 1950s attracted some tourism to Brougton-in-Furness, although most tourists head further north or east towards the central lakes. In the 1990s, the A595 road was diverted to try to improve the environment of the town and preserve its rural attraction. The town consists of, amongst other shops, a Post Office, a newsagents, a grocer, a butcher, a bakery as well as a variety of pubs and restaurants. There's a Tourist Information Centre situated within the main square. FAQs

How long does it take to fix a roofing sheet on a commercial property?

How long it takes to fix a roofing sheet on a commercial property will depend on the size of your roof and how difficult access is. Corrugated iron roofing sheets are much easier to fit than other roofing materials such as clay tiles or EDPM rubber, so that will work in your favour.

The size of the team of the roofing company you engage will also make a difference. If they have a lot of tradespeople working on your roof with lots of experience, it will take less time, while if there are only a couple of people it will take longer.

Another thing to bear in mind when considering how long it will take to fix a roofing sheet is the weather. If it starts to rain, the contractors will probably have to stop and wait, as the roof will be too slippery to work on.

In general, it should take between 1 and 3 days to fit roofing sheets on a commercial property. If you’re not having a full roof replacement, it may only take one day, whereas a completely new metal roof could take up to 3 days.

Why do commercial buildings have flat roofs?

There are a few reasons why commercial buildings often have flat roofs. Lots of people argue that flat roofs aren’t as attractive as pitched roofs, which is why it’s uncommon to see a residential property with an entirely flat roof. Lots of commercial buildings don’t need to look attractive, so go for flat roofs because they’re cheaper.

Flat roofs tend to be less expensive than pitched roofs, especially for large, broad commercial buildings. Some commercial buildings simply couldn’t have a pitched roof because their width would mean that the roof would have to be extremely high. Flat roofs are also cost-effective for commercial buildings because it means that air conditioning and ventilation units can go on the roof, saving space in and around the building.

Commercial buildings also often have flat roofs because they don’t need the loft space that residential properties need. If there’s no need for the space, it doesn’t make sense to spend more money on a pitched roof just to keep the attic space empty. Flat roofs also give the commercial building owner the opportunity to use the space as a smoking area for employees or give access to fire escapes to upper floors.

If you’re having a commercial property build, make sure you speak to the experts about the type of roof that is suitable for you. If you’re planning on having air conditioning or ventilation systems installed within the property, you might be best off with a flat roof – but if you need some extra storage space, a pitched roof might work best for you.

What is commercial roofing?

Commercial roofing simply refers to any roofing work, including installation and repair, that is done to commercial buildings. This might include office roofs, shop roofs or commercial unit roofs. Every building needs a roof to keep out the rain!

Since looks aren’t usually the first priority with commercial buildings, lots of commercial properties have flat roofs. These are often made from felt, EDPM rubber or fibreglass. Felt is the cheapest commercial roofing material, while fibreglass tends to be the most expensive. In felt roofs, roofers use an adhesive to stick roofing felt onto a frame. EDPM rubber roofs have a rubber membrane that is laid down and glued onto the roof and coated with a contact adhesive, while fibreglass uses a cut glass fibre mat that is pressed on before a resin and topcoat are applied.

Not all roofing companies will offer commercial roofing services, because generally the buildings tend to be bigger. Small companies won’t have enough tradespeople to work on a roof without making it very expensive for you. Commercial buildings also tend to need more scaffolding to make it safe for the professionals to work, so some smaller roofing companies won’t offer commercial services. Make sure you check a company’s website or social media if you’re looking for commercial roofing – on the Quotatis Directory, our roofers will show whether they do commercial roofing to make your search easier.

How much does it cost to replace a commercial flat roof?
If your commercial flat roof needs replacing, how much it costs will depend on how big the roof is and what you want it to be made from. Lots of commercial flat roofs are made from felt or asphalt, but people are also beginning to turn to materials like EDPM rubber and fibreglass. Flat roofs can last a long time, but if it’s been 20 years or more since you had it replaced or inspected, it might be time for a new one. If a roofer inspects it and finds lifting, flashing problems, sagging or lots of blisters, it’s probably time to replace your flat commercial roof. So how much does it cost to replace your commercial flat roof? The average cost is around £4,500, but it could be much less or much more. It depends on how big your roof is and what material you choose. Felt is the cheapest material you can use for your commercial flat roof, at around £40-70 per metre squared, while a lead bay roof will cost the most at £90-110 per square metre. EDPM rubber and fibreglass roofs are being used more and more because they’re so durable, and they will cost between £80 and £110 per square metre. It might be worth spending a little more upfront to get a stronger and longer-lasting commercial flat roof.
