About Competent Roofer
CompetentRoofer is a government-licensed competent person scheme that enables professional roofing companies to self-certify that their work adheres to the current Building Regulations in England and Wales. The scheme includes all domestic, industrial and commercial roofing types.

If 50% or more of your roof needs to be replaced, you have to notify your local authority at least 48 hours before work starts. This is under Building Regulations. If you don’t declare to your local authority, you could face a £5,000 fine excluding the cost of making the work meet standards if it fails to when checked.

The benefit of using a member of CompetentRoofer is that they can certify that their work meets Building Regulations and report to the local authority for you. They are also regulated so will always be compliant with the most recent regulations.

Another advantage of using a company registered with CompetentRoofer include that they are professional contractors who have been inspected before being able to join the scheme. They must also undergo regular inspections in the future to ensure that they still meet expectations.

CompetentRoofer members can also offer a ten year insurance-backed guarantee with roof refurbishment works up to £50,000 where the building height is four storeys or less.

UKAS accredits CompetentRoofer, which means that its members can apply to be inspected under the requirements of PAS 2030 and the Green Deal Code of Practice. This allows them to be registered with the Green Deal Oversight and Registration Body, meaning they’re qualified to undertake Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (ECO) work.

CompetentRoofer companies will display the logo on their documents. They are also issued with a certificate every year, so ask your roofer to show proof of their CompetentRoofer membership.
